About Me:
I am a global nomad who's starting to settle down, a cereal box psychologist, writer, idealist, cat-lover, seeker and eternally curious human.
I am 49, born and raised in Denmark; have lived in a dozen-odd countries on three continents. As I examine my life, from this place in the “middle,” I can say that I have NOT accomplished “Great Things” and I have NOT had a “Major Impact” on the world. Instead, I have accomplished 100's of “little things,” and have had scores of “small impacts” on my surroundings. Thus, I have often been described as an “Excellent Generalist,” rather than an expert on anything in particular.
My life orientation is towards finding those things that link us, rather than what separates us. I believe LOVE is the answer, and I endeavor to BE Love, as I go forth in the world. Love, relationships and the connections we make are an endless source of fascination to me, and overall gives me a sense of direction and purpose.
I am a “Highly Sensitive Person” (or HSP) as defined by Dr. Elaine Aron, and I am on an ongoing journey to rediscover self and to live authentically. Part of that involves a major “re-invention” of myself after living as a misfit in the Business World, and which has been going on for about 15 years… and with each passing year I gain more appreciation for the old saying “It's the journey, not the destination, that matters.”
I am actively involved in the global “HSP Community,” both online and off. I work with HSPs, both in terms of facilitating group connections through the web (with regional social networks) and I periodically help put on periodic retreats for HSPs, known as ”HSP Gatherings.”
I have several ongoing projects “cooking:” One is the continuing development of the Pacific Northwest HSP Network, a web site/social network hybrid designed to help Highly Sensitive People in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia and Alaska not only connect in cyberspace, but also form local social and support groups in fleshspace. If you're interested, visit the site here.
I am also helping establish “Tribe,” which is a niche magazine (and community) for HSPs. If you're an HSP, I encourage you to visit the Tribe web site and get involved– they are not only FOR you, but BY you– if you're a photographer, writer, poet or other cultural creative, they want to hear from you. Also, join their forum community.
I help moderate the HSP Group here on Gaia, so I hope you'll stop by and join us, and participate! Elsewhere, I write the HSP Notes blog, which is the oldest HSP-related “niche blog” on the web. If you'd like to connect, you can also find me on Facebook and on Twitter. I'd love to hear from you!
In my daily life, I strive to live a sustainable life that makes only a small footprint on our delicate planet, while also being able to sustain me. Whereas I call myself a “non-materialist,” I none-the-less like having a roof over my head, some food to eat and an Internet connection– however, my days of trying to live as an “ambitious striver” are long behind me. I have sold much of what I own, and continue to redefine the meaning of inner peace and contentment. I am not convinced you must live an ascetic lifestyle in order to have a meaningful life– merely a sustainable one.
Whereas I feel unsure about my true calling, I do know that it involves helping people reduce their own personal suffering, and it involves writing and bringing people together in synergy and love, in some way. In the meantime, I stay open to whatever the Universe has to show me, and practice a balance of “allowing” things to come into my life, while also “letting go” of my attachments to specific outcomes.
Why am I here? In a word: “Connections.” I am eternally looking for other members of “my tribe,” and although I am not yet 100% sure what my tribe looks like, I am enjoying the process of getting to know people who are on similar journeys to my own. And, of course, I am drawn to the opportunity of helping to build something wonderful. By other measuring tools, I am a type Nine by the enneagram, and an INFJ by Myers-Briggs.
In September 2006 I relocated to Port Townsend, WA, a historic seaport at the “corner” of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Puget Sound. For a couple of decades, this place “called” me and I finally had to answer. Turns out I was right to think that the Power of Place is strong here… seems this is where many members of my lost tribe have settled.
